Mospeada Ep. 9: Lost World Fugue

0
Summary

At Reflex Point, the Refless begins an evolutionary experiment so that the Inbit can change into organisms best suited to living on Earth. The experiment will include examining organisms from Earth’s past and present. Elsewhere, Stick flies patrol over a forest in the Eta Legioss and says to himself that they won’t be able to cross the mountains tonight. After landing, he switches to his MOSPEADA and is joined by Ray and Mint. They drive off to scout the area, and Stick senses the movement of something – a Grab. They move out again and suddenly fall into a deep hole. Stick and Ray transform their MOSPEADAs and use their thrusters to slow their descent. They continue to fall for a long time until finally they splash into a lake. Stick wakes up first on land and gets Ray and Mint up. Ray is surprised to see huge dragonflies, but Mint thinks they’re cute. She sticks her feet in the water and comments that it feels nice, but suddenly a dinosaur comes out and attacks her. Stick and Ray begin shooting at it and kill it. More dinosaurs come out of the water and begin to eat the one that Stick and Ray just killed. They drove off, and on the surface Houquet and Jim report to Yellow that they can’t find Stick, Ray and Mint. Ray asks Stick where they’re going, and Stick says he just wants to get away from the monsters. Ray spots a cave high on the cliff that might be an exit, so they head toward it, unaware that a Grab is watching them. They drive through the cave and end up falling into another cavern, but they end up landing on a pack of Stegosauruses. They manage to get away, and Ray senses the presence of the Inbit, but Stick doesn’t see anything. Mint begins dancing on a large egg, but a Tyrannosaurus rex suddenly appears behind her and attacks. Stick and Ray repeatedly shoot the T-rex, killing it. Ray spots two Grabs, but they suddenly retreat into the forest before Stick can see them. Ray wonders why the Grabs didn’t attack them and what is going on. Mint makes a fire while Ray builds a spear to hunt for fish. He catches a strange ancient fish and spots a Pterodactyl flying above them.

On the surface, Jim wonders what happened to the others, and Yellow says all they can do is wait. Jim wonders how Houquet can sleep without worry, and she says she can’t sleep with them being so noisy. Yellow says she can’t sleep because she’s worried, and Jim wonders why she doesn’t show her worry. Mint falls asleep in the dinosaur cave, and Stick wonders how she can sleep in such a creepy place, or how Ray can eat weird food. Stick says they don’t even know where to go, and Ray says he’s trying to sort out the confusion. Something has been bothering him for a while, but he can’t figure out what. He thinks back on what they’ve experienced during the day and wonders if there really are animals present from the Paleozoic era. Between the mix of Paleozoic plant life and Mesozoic animals, Ray says that it’s as if they’re watching the evolution of life on Earth in a museum. Thinking about the Grabs, Ray realizes that the cave must be an Inbit lab to experiment with life on Earth and evolution. Stick thinks he’s crazy, but Ray insists that the Inbit must be conducting tests to adapt themselves to life on Earth. He thinks that the three of them must be guinea pigs, which is why the Inbit haven’t killed them. The Refless then possesses Mint’s body and says that humans aren’t immortal organisms. The Refless/Mint says that life is always evolving, and humans are in the middle of evolution. She says the Earth will have a new era for another evolved organism and releases her control on Mint. Mint wakes up and says she had a strange dream about marrying an Inbit. Several T-rexes begin fighting nearby, and the three decide to get away. A Pterodactyl attacks them from above, and Stick tells Ray to escape with Mint. He transforms and opens fire on the Pterodactyls. A mass of dinosaurs begin approaching them as an earthquake hits the cavern. The three drive away and Ray suggests following the instincts of the escaping animals. The ground breaks apart in front of them, and Ray spots a light nearby. Two Grabs then attack, and Mint notices that the light is decreasing. The Grabs knock down Stick and Ray and head for the light exit. Stick and Ray give chase and destroy the Grabs. Together with Mint, they jump into the light and are transported back to the surface. The cavern continues to collapse and kills all the dinosaurs. A mountain collapses on the surface, and Stick comments that they barely escaped. Mint says she feels sorry for the dinosaurs, and Ray comments that they were just used by the Inbit and killed. Ray says that humans are the same, killing innocent animals to survive. Stick disagrees, and Ray spots the Eta Legioss approaching from the distance. Mint wants to tell their story to Houquet, but Ray doesn’t think anyone will believe them.

Commentary

I guess you could say this episode is Mospeada meets Land of the Lost. The Refless decides to conduct an evolutionary experiment by studying Earth’s ancient lifeforms: dinosaurs. Ray, Stick and Mint accidentally stumble into this sandbox and encounter all sorts of weird animals. Most of this episode consists of running into dinosaurs and then escaping from them. There’s also the strange occurrence of the Refless possessing Mint briefly, and I don’t even know how that’s possible. It’s something that we’ve never seen before in the show and will never see again. For whatever reason, the Inbit decide to end the experiment and kill all the dinosaurs. Altogether, this a pretty weird episode and not one of the show’s best.
