In July 1999, human history was forever altered when a damaged Supervision Army gun destroyer appeared over Earth and crash landed on South Ataria Island in the Pacific Ocean. Initial investigations of the ship, dubbed Alien Starship-1 (ASS-1) revealed that it was manned by giant-sized aliens with advanced technology. The ship’s technology was reverse engineered and named OverTechnology, causing human technology levels to take a massive leap forward. New technologies derived from the ASS-1 included a transformation system, a space fold system, a gravity control system, a heat pile system, super dimension energy weaponry and reaction weaponry. Eventually, the crashed ship was rechristened the SDF-1 Macross after the new United Nations government embarked on a project to restore the ship and make it the flagship of U.N. Spacy. In this new configuration, the Macross was armed with super dimension energy cannon in its bow, eight beam cannons, four rail cannons and many anti-ship missile launchers and missile launchers. Over 200 VF-1 Valkyries and nearly 600 Destroids were assigned to the ship’s forces.
Due to the Unification Wars, the Macross’ launch was delayed until the fateful date of February 7, 2009, when ships from the Zentradi army de-folded near Earth while tracking the ASS-1. An unknown Supervision Army defense system left behind as a booby trap activated and fired the ship’s main gun at the Zentradi, initiating the conflict later known as Space War I. A mishap with the fold system then dumped the Macross near Pluto, along with South Ataria Island and Macross City. The city was rebuilt in the ship’s massive interior, and the seafaring vessels Daedalus and Prometheus were permanently docked with the Macross. The ship then made a slow return to Earth with conventional engines. Along the way, new defensive and offensive capabilities were developed in the form of the pinpoint barrier and Daedalus Attack. After Earth’s surface was annihilated by the Bodol Main Fleet in February 2010, the Macross destroyed the Fulbtzs-Berrentzs mothership and brought Space War I to a close.
The damaged Macross landed in a crater on Earth, which became the starting point of rebuilding Macross City on the surface. The Macross, now docked in a lake, served as the centerpiece of the city and the headquarters of U.N. Spacy. The new city remained in relative peace until the Defensive Battle of Macross City in January 2012, when Kamjin Kravshera performed a suicide attack and crashed a Zentradi Gun Destroyer into the Macross, severely damaging the ship. The Macross was then extensively refit and docked with two ARMD carriers that served as its new “arms.” When the Humanity Seeding Project began in 2012, additional Macross class vessels were constructed, bearing the designation SDFN. The Macross’ transforming design also served as the inspiration for later generations of vessels like the New Macross class, Macross Quarter class and Macross Elysion.
In March 2040, the virturoid idol singer Sharon Apple held a concert in Macross City to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the war’s end. Unbeknownst to anyone, Marge Gueldoa added an illegal bio-neural chip to Sharon's hardware while on planet Eden. As a result, Sharon became emotionally unstable and seized control of the drone fighter AIF-X-9 Ghost and the Macross. The mad idol used the AIF- X-9 to attack YF-21 test pilot Guld Goa Bowman, and the Macross against YF-19 test pilot Isamu Alva Dyson. Sharon was defeated when Isamu destroyed the Macross’ computer core, causing the ship to descend back into the lake. Nearly two decades after the Sharon Apple Incident, the insectoid alien Vajra de-folded into the skies above Macross City in 2059 as part of Grace O’Connor’s plan to subjugate humanity, but the aliens left before causing damage.
