For more than three years, Eiji Asuka’s SPT-LZ-00X Layzner held an unmatched trump card against the Gradosian Empire: the high performance V-MAX system. However, that advantage was nullified in late 1999 when Eiji lost a fight to Le Cain’s SPT-ZK-53U Zakaal, which featured a super charged V-MAX. Layzner had fallen behind the times of SPT development, but its mission continued in the Earth-built E-SPT-LZ-00X-B New Layzner. Layzner’s onboard AIs Rei and Folon were transferred to the upgraded New Layzner, which featured extra vernier thrusters, higher power output and a V-MAX system that was 23 percent more powerful. Aside from these improvements, New Layzner’s armaments were identical to the original unit. On December 30, New Layzner made its combat debut when Gradosian forces attacked the Earth Liberation Front at Peru’s Nazca Lines, site of the long dormant Seal of Grados. Eiji headed into space and fought a rematch with Le Cain. The battle proved inconclusive due to the Seal of Grados distorting space and taking Le Cain with it. With the battle over, Eiji and New Layzner returned to Earth.
