Episode 4: Why Do You Flout the Rule?

Review by Brian Shea

Summary

A sandstorm hits the Iron Gear. Kotsett calls out for Horla with no success. Carrying leaves, and finds a room where he tells Plopopieff, Lovely Rose and their dancers that they need to prepare to fight. Later, Carrying tries to show them how to pilot a Walker Machine, forcing the dancers into them despite their complaints. Kid Horla and Geraba Geraba return. Horla says they have come up with a good way to capture Jiron. Meanwhile, the Sand Rats are going through the same sandstorm. Blume complains to Rag about Elchi, who is piloting one of the Xabungles. Horla tells Carrying about Jiron's pursuit of Timp, causing Carrying to laugh at him taking seriously something from a week ago. Dyke and Elchi argue as he works on repairing the Xabungle. Elchi joins the rest of them to eat. Jiron says he is pursuing Timp, who killed his parents more than a week ago. This causes everyone to laugh at how foolish he's being. Jiron is told it's his fault for not settling it within three days and now he would be the criminal. Elchi tells him he's being a hypocrite by stealing the Xabungle for more than three days. Jiron says he'll return it once he's done. Everyone laughs, asking what he's going to do without a Walker Machine. He won't be able to be a Breaker or Rockman. Jiron gets up and heads into the Xabungle, saying he'll do it on his own, and leaves. Meanwhile, Timp pilots the Gabament through the sandstorm and lands on a nearby landship. He is held at gunpoint on the bridge by the transporter Grocky, who leads a group of former Breakers. Timp says he just wants food and gasoline but also speaks about enabling them to expand their territory by taking over Carrying's. Upon escaping from the room, Grocky decides to go along with his plan. Jiron has trouble piloting the Xabungle down a cliff, especially with his injured arm. The Iron Gear continues on through the White Canyon, approaching where Timp is. Elchi is able to contact her father by the radio, spotting a smoke signal left nearby. The Sand Rats doubt Jiron will be able to beat Timp, who has a newer Walker Machine. Rag heads off and the others follow. Jiron pilots the Xabungle towards the smoke symbol, spotting Timp. Timp sets off a signal to Grocky. Everyone starts heading towards that point.

Jiron discovers that Timp has abandoned the spot where he left the signal. He calls out for him to come out and fight him fair and square. A blast quickly hits nearby, knocking over the Xabungle. Timp says Jiron has lost his ability for revenge and fires upon him as Jiron pursues the Gabament on his own. The Gabament falls backwards off a cliff. Jiron heads back to the Xabungle and after some difficulty climbing makes his way into the Xabungle, dodging Timp's shots just in time. Jiron spots Grocky's landship nearby and continues his pursuit of Timp. He soon finds a number of Walker Machines nearby and the Iron Gear behind him. Carrying calls out to Timp, saying the Xabungle is his. Timp says he needs to settle things with Jiron or he'll be going after him forever. Carrying proposes an in person duel between the two. Timp is hesitant, but does so with Horla behind him. Both get out of their Walker Machines. Meanwhile, Elchi, piloting the other Xabungle spots Grocky's landship nearby as well as the Sand Rats. She soon approaches where everyone else is. Timp says he's quite good at drawing and it's too late for Jiron to back out. The two shoot at each other, but neither are able to get a direct hit. The Sand Rats arrive. Elchi's Xabungle is blasted, but grabbed by Horla's Promeus. Timp curses Grocky for messing things up. Jiron heads back into the Xabungle and Timp returns to his Gabament. Several Walker Machines attack Elchi's Xabungle, but Jiron fights them off. Grocky calls out to Carrying, saying he's going to take over his territory while this infighting occurs. Grocky's landship fires at the Iron Gear's cockpit, knocking out Carrying, who falls to his death. The Iron Gear, Elchi, Jiron, Horla and the Sand Rats become unified in wanting to fight off Grocky and his forces. Elchi's Xabungle falls off a cliff but Jiron is able to knock away a Walker Machine pursuing her. Grocky's landship departs. Jiron realizes Timp has escaped as well. Everyone gathers on the deck around Carrying's body. Jiron is told this wouldn't have happened if he wasn't chasing after Timp. Jiron says he has to be true to himself and this wouldn't have happened if Timp wasn't the type of person he is. Elchi tears up over her father, saying she wanted to dedicate her life to culture. Jiron asks what's wrong with settling things.

Commentary

It seems like we can't get away from Tomino's tendency to kill off his characters even in a more comedic show of his as Carrying Cargo bites the dust here. Farewell to yet another descriptive named character in the vein of Dunbine's Shot Weapon. I wonder if Elchi will take responsibility for the Iron Gear or someone else like Kid Horla will try to step in. Carrying's fear of his reputation being damaged enough to be taken over due to Jiron stealing the Xabungle comes to pass. We get a lot more chatter in this episode about the three day rule, and just how ridiculous Jiron's questioning of it is. At the very least he admits willingness to return the Xabungle after taking out Timp and is not a total hypocrite. It will be interesting to see if everyone unites and goes after Grocky or the infighting will continue. Jiron taking on Timp on his own seemed quite reckless, especially when he is pursuing him in person while Timp was in his Walker Machine.
