Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam/A New Translation
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is the second Gundam TV series and originally aired in Japan from 1985-1986. Following the success of the Mobile Suit Gundam compilation movies, director Yoshiyuki Tomino worked on several other mecha anime projects before returning to Gundam. The series reunited Tomino with several staff members from the original series, including character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and mechanical designer Kunio Okawara, who is joined by new designers Mamoru Nagano and Kazumi Fujita. The series' soundtrack is composed by Shigeaki Saegusa, who would go on to work on the next two Gundam entries. Set in UC 0087, the series stars Kamille Bidan, a young pilot in the AEUG paramilitary group that opposes the Earth Federation's fascist Titans task force. After its initial broadcast ended in 1986, Zeta Gundam was followed by a direct sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. For the series' 20th anniversary, Tomino returned to direct the A New Translation compilation trilogy that revised the story and blended new and old animation. Although Zeta Gundam did not receive a North American TV broadcast, the TV series and movies are available on home video from Right Stuf.
