Technical and Historical Notes

In January C.E. 71, ZAFT captures four prototype Earth Alliance mobile suits and immediately reverse engineers the new technologies found in them, including beam sabers and Phase Shift (PS) armor. Afterwards, ZAFT begins developing its own line of Gundam mobile suits, including the experimental YMF-X000A Dreadnought Gundam (aka X Astray). Based on a ZGMF-600 GuAIZ frame, the Dreadnought Gundam serves as a testbed for several new technologies, including the Neutron Jammer Canceler. With ZAFT's N-Jammers deployed across Earth and space, nuclear reactions are impossible to ignite, but an N-Jammer Canceler negates that effect. Phase Shift armor is also included, and with a nuclear reactor, this armor system can run indefinitely. In addition, the Dreadnought Gundam is also the test unit for the the DRAGOON (Disconnected Rapid Armament Group Overlook Operation Network) system, which is similar to the Alliance's Gunbarrel system. Both systems require pilots with high spatial awareness, which is a rare ability. Although a more elaborate (and wireless) DRAGOON system is used later in the ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam, the Dreadnought Gundam features four pods mounted on the backpack. It also features two hip-mounted "Pristis" beam reamers which function in the same manner, although they can operate with or without wires. Other armaments include head-mounted CIWS guns, a beam rifle and a composite shield mounting a beam claw.

The Dreadnought Gundam is initially tested for ZAFT by civilian test pilot Courtney Hieronymus. The unit is to be discarded after testing, but former PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Siegel Clyne arranges for the Dreadnought Gundam to fall in the hands of the Junk Guild and Reverend Malchio so that its N-Jammer Canceler can be used to solve Earth's energy crisis. During its transport, the N-Jammer Canceler is stolen by Serpent Tail mercenary Gai Murakumo, who is hired by Clyne to monitor the situation and make sure the N-Jammer Canceler doesn't fall into the wrong hands. The N-Jammer Canceler attracts the attention of CAT1-X1/3 Hyperion Gundam pilot Canard Pars, a Eurasian Federation operative searching for Three Ships Alliance pilot Kira Yamato. Canard attempts to capture the N-Jammer Canceler for himself, but it is safely installed in the Dreadnought Gundam, now piloted by Malchio's representative Prayer Reverie. At the same time, Junk Guild pilot Lowe Guele uses the facilities at the Orb space station Ame-no-Mihashira to complete the DRAGOON pack. With the Dreadnought Gundam fully equipped, Prayer, a clone of a person with high spatial awareness, engages Canard in a final duel outside an abandoned colony at Lagrange point 4. With his spatial awareness, Prayer is able to effectively use the DRAGOON pods and beam reamers against Canard. Near the end of their duel, Prayer uses the DRAGOON pods to trap the Hyperion Gundam in an energy prism. With the Hyperion Gundam destroyed, the duel ends and Prayer seemingly dies in Canard's arms. Afterwards, Lowe remodels the Dreadnought Gundam by removing the DRAGOON pack and adding design elements from the Hyperion Gundam. The new suit, dubbed YMF-X000A/H Dreadnought H, is piloted by Canard, now a member of the Junk Guild.
