The Barzam Refined Type is a variant of the mass production type RMS-154 Barzam, which was introduced during the middle stages of the Gryps Conflict. The Barzam was developed using the RX-178 Gundam Mark II as a base, and is designed for compatibility with the weapons and options used by other Federation Forces mobile suits. As many former Zeon engineers participated in its development, the final design incorporates a monoeye and other trademarks of Zeon mobile suits, and shows little trace of its Federation ancestry. The appearance of this refined type makes the relationship between the Barzam and the Gundam Mark II more apparent.
Although the Barzam is best known as a Titans mobile suit, it is also used by regular Federation Forces units such as those stationed at the asteroid base Pezun. Upon the outbreak of the Pezun Rebellion on January 25, UC 0088, the Pezun garrison uses the Barzam Refined Type in combat against the rebellious instructor corps who go on to declare themselves the New Desides.
