Technical and Historical Notes

In late C.E. 73, the Deep Space Survey & Development Organization (DSSD) develops an advanced space exploration mobile suit, the GSX-401FW Stargazer Gundam. As part of its exploration mission, the Stargazer is intended to be unmanned and controlled by Artificial Intelligence. In addition to the advanced AI, the Stargazer Gundam includes the new "Voiture Lumiere" interplanetary propulsion system. A laser fired from a DSSD satellite hits the "Voiture Lumiere" ring, propelling the Stargazer Gundam and allowing it to build up speed over time as it travels between planets. The "Voiture Lumiere" system is also utilized by the Martian GSF-YAM01 Δ Astray, and variants are used by the ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam and ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam. As part of its autonomous design, the Stargazer Gundam is equipped with a nanomachine repair system. Although the Stargazer Gundam is intended as a non-combat unit, it does have defensive and offensive capabilities. The Stargazer Gundam can deflect and capture incoming beam shots to create a field of beam cutters. In addition, it can use the beam pistol utilized by the UT-1D Civilian Astray DSSD Custom. When used in combat, the Stargazer Gundam's AI unit is replaced with a cockpit block for two pilots.

In October C.E. 73, the Stargazer Gundam is stationed at a DSSD station on Earth when terrorists drop the remains of the Junius Seven PLANT in the incident that is later known as "Break the World." The tidal surge caused by falling pieces engulfs a coastal city and threatens the DSSD station, but the Stargazer Gundam is safely launched into space. The development of the Stargazer Gundam continues with short-range tests of its "Voiture Lumiere" system. The Earth Alliance's secret Phantom Pain unit launches an attack on DSSD to seize the Stargazer Gundam. To fend off the attack, DSSD researchers Selene MacGriff and Sol Ryuune L'ange send the Stargazer Gundam into battle, although it lacks the intended Neutron Jammer Canceler for its powerplant. During a duel with Sven Cal Bayang's GAT-X105E+AQM/E-X09S Strike Noir Gundam, Selene ejects Sol from the cockpit and uses the satellite propulsion laser to propel both the Stargazer Gundam and the Strike Noir out to Venus. Afterward, Selene rescues Sven and uses the last bit of the Strike Noir's energy to power the Stargazer Gundam for its long journey back to Earth.
