Technical
and Historical Notes
Along with
the Flatmouse, the Flydart was an
aircraft based on the data from the FF-X7
Core Fighter. The Flydart was developed to operate in the
highest levels of Earth's atmosphere, and intercept targets that
were in the process of re-entry, or had just achieved re-entry.
Due to the extreme altitudes it had to operate at, the Flydart
could not take off via conventional means if it intends to operate
at high altitudes. Instead, two methods were developed to launch
the Flydart: from the ground using jettisonable booster rockets,
or from an altitude of 10,000 meters from the underside of a modified
Depp Rog heavy bomber. The
Flydart could be recovered post-sortie by the modified Depp
Rog via use of a special hook near the cockpit. The Flydart,
being primarily designed to operate at high-altitudes, used rocket
engines for thrust, and its small wingspan stemmed from the use
of the 'lifting-body' principle, and both of these factors made
is far less effective at lower altitudes. Flydarts saw heavy action
during the One Year War, where they were primarily responsible
for disrupting the Principality of Zeon's re-supply route between
Side 3 and the Earth Attack Force, which they accomplished with
great effectiveness.
