Zone of the Enders

Zone of the Enders could be considered the modern Japanese mecha video game and anime series. Although relatively small compared to other mecha series in terms of franchise, this has not prevented ZOE from making a mark in entertainment history. Like many mecha series, ZOE is essentially a war story, with the general storyline being centered around a Gundam-like conflict between the Earth's United Nations Space Force and Mars' massive army of BAHRAM. However, aside from the war, the theme can be likened to the evolution and purpose of mankind, much like Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as uncovering the secrets to the mysterious mineral known as Metatron. Essentially, this makes ZOE the first series to effectively combine "real world" elements from stories like Mobile Suit Gundam, Macross and Metal Gear Solid with the mysterious and complex nature of series like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Aura Battler Dunbine and Shin Getter Robo. In the year 2001, the Hideo Kojima-produced Zone of the Enders PS2 game was released in America and Japan to a very high success, thus prompting spin-off anime series Zone of the Enders: 2167 Idolo and Zone of the Enders: Dolores, i, as well as the GBA game Zone of the Enders 2173 Testament (aka The Fist of Mars) and the sequel PS2 video game Anubis: Zone of the Enders (aka The 2nd Runner). Konami released the games in the U.S., while the anime was distributed by ADV Films. ADV's release of the series is now out of print.
