Blue Comet SPT Layzner

Blue Comet SPT Layzner

After completing work on Armored Trooper VOTOMS, in 1985 director Ryosuke Takahashi worked on Blue Comet SPT Layzner as his next TV project. For this series, Takahashi brought back several VOTOMS collaborators, including composer Hiroki Inui, mechanical designer Kunio Okawara (Gundam) and character designer Moriyasu Taniguchi (Mellowlink). Set in the then-future 1996, the series focuses on a world where the Cold War between America and the Soviet Union has spread to Mars. A group of Earth teens visiting Mars cross paths with Eiji Asuka, who has come with the super powered tracer Layzner to warn Earth of an impending invasion by the Grados Empire. Like Yoshiyuki Tomino's Gundam and Ideon before it, Layzner was canceled before its planned run ended, resulting in a choppy conclusion. In 1986, Sunrise created a three part OVA series that compiled the TV series and featured an expanded version of the ending. Bandai Entertainment licensed Layzner for the U.S. market in 2001, but the series was never released. The series was re-released on Blu-ray in Japan in 2013.
