Episode 44: A Serious Match! Umi vs. Tarta & Tatra

Review by Peter Laliberte

February 4, 2017

Summary

Lantis visits Clef and reports what happened. Clef wonders why both Hikaru and Eagle were chosen since there can only be one Pillar. Primera searches for Lantis and gets mad when she thinks he's with Hikaru. Mokona tackles her and tries to convince her Hikaru is a good person, but Primera insists that anyone who gets between her and Lantis is evil. Mokona brings her attention to the window where they see the Bravada. Umi volunteers to go deal with it and Ascot insists on going too, saying that he loves her. Umi interprets that in a platonic way, saying she also loves him and everyone else. She asks him to protect the castle so she can fight without worries and he agrees. Umi also tells Fuu to stay behind in case something happens. Umi heads out in Selece and Tatra tells Tarta to not have any regrets. The djinn appear but don't attack. Tarta speaks through them and challenges Umi to a duel to be fought in person. Umi accepts and the djinn form a floating platform where the duel will be held.

Umi and Tarta face off as Tatra watches on. The duel begins with Umi eventually being the victor. Tarta falls off the platform as a result but Umi saves her. Tatra says it's her turn next and Tarta warns Umi that no one on Chizeta could beat her sister. Tatra overpowers Umi using a sword that also works as a whip. Umi is determined not to lose but still can't get the upper hand on Tatra. Tatra throws Umi into the air, but Tarta has the djinn save her. Umi gathers her power and fires a blast from her sword that takes Tatra down. Tarta apologizes for helping Umi but Tatra is sure she would have lost eventually anyway. Tatra admits their defeat and Umi is happy they can be friends now. Debonair realizes the proof of the Pillar has changed shape. She says she has to return Cephiro to nothingness before the new Pillar is chosen and calls for Nova. Debonair gives Nova two monsters named Seville and Alba and orders her to go fill the castle with fear again. Nova is more than happy to oblige.

Commentary

So that's another loose plot thread tied up, but it's worse than the time with Aska because it was completely removed from the rest of the story. I wouldn't say this episode was entirely skippable, but it could have been dedicated to more than just dealing with Tatra and Tarta (and Primera being annoying). Well at least since that's out of the way now they can focus on more important things. Umi gets to show off her fencing skills, but her denseness as well. Ascot blatantly confesses to her but she still got the wrong idea. Poor guy, he should have stayed small because that seems to be what Umi is into.
