Episode 18: The Last Rune-God: Rayearth, Lord of Fire

Review by Peter Laliberte

January 4, 2014

Summary

Alcyone searches for Zagato and finds him talking with Emeraude. Zagato says he'll go himself to defeat the Knights and Emeraude begs him not to. Alcyone wonders why Zagato doesn't take control of Emeraude instead of just imprisoning her. Mokona takes the girls into a cave which leads to a shrine in a volcano. They thank Mokona for leading them to the Rune-Gods, though it doesn't know where Zagato is. The shrine doors open and Hikaru is taken inside. Umi and Fuu are left behind and Zagato appears before them. He removes their armor and knocks them out. Hikaru meets with Rayearth and he asks her if she truly wishes to be a Magic Knight. She says she does, and he tells her to prove her worth. He sends her outside of the shrine where she finds Umi and Fuu. Zagato appears and attacks her. She protects Umi and Fuu, but loses her armor as well. Lafarga arrives in time to help her.

Lafarga attacks Zagato, but Zagato blasts Lafarga from behind. Zagato is going to finish him off, but Hikaru gets in the way. Zagato offers to send Hikaru home if she gives up, but Hikaru refuses. She says she'll save Cephiro like she promised the others. Zagato attacks but Lafarga shields her. Hikari pushes forward and Zagato rewards her bravery by unleashing his strongest spell. Rayearth saves Hikaru and declares her worthy. Her armor and sword evolve again and Rayearth appears in his mecha form. Hikaru wounds Zagato and causes him to retreat. Umi and Fuu's armor and weapons also upgrade, and all three Rune-Gods gather together. Rayearth declares them to be the true Magic Knights and the girls board their respective Rune-Gods. Lafarga asks them to go save Emeraude and the orbs Ferio gave them lead the way.

Commentary

No surprises here, but at least Hikaru doing all the work is justified since it's her Rune-God episode. Though if Rayearth had been watching previous episodes he'd know Hikaru had proven herself in the exact same manner multiple times already. As such there's far less of an impact as when it was the other girls' turns. Still, it's nice to finally see all the Rune-Gods together and the Knights in their max level equipment. We'll finally get some mecha action in the next episode.
