Episode 14: Hikaru, Umi and Fuu's Unyielding Wish

Review by Peter Laliberte

January 4, 2014

Summary

Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu fight their way through a monster on their way to the floating mountain. Umi and Fuu are grateful for the concern Hikaru shows them afterwards, but they tell her she needs to think about herself sometimes. Hikaru says she doesn't want anyone else to die like Presea. They express regret about being unable to save Presea and wonder how long it will be before they truly become magic knights. Mokona projects a map that shows the girls' journey and they realize just how far they've gone. Fuu and Umi compare their situation to a role playing game but Hikaru has no idea what that is. She explains that she and her brothers are too busy with their kendo dojo. Fuu says she's on the archery team and invites Hikaru to her next match while Umi says they can go to her fencing match too. Mokona wanders off and while Hikaru goes after it, Umi and Fuu disappear in a pillar of light.

Hikaru searches for the others and Mokona contacts Clef. Clef doesn't know what kind of monster took them and explains that almost all of Cephiro's monsters are manifestations of fear. The transmission ends and Hikaru notices the time they can talk to Clef is getting shorter. Hikaru uses the map Mokona showed them earlier to see where the other two are being taken. Hikaru gives chase, injuring herself as she runs through a briar patch. The light appears behind her but Mokona pushes her down a hole and is engulfed instead. Hikaru tries to climb out of the hole but only gets more bloodied in the process. She realizes that the monster is attracted by blood and lures it out by cutting herself. She defeats it and frees the others. She faints and wakes up to find Umi and Fuu worrying over her. Hikaru says she's not alone because she has them and that together they'll become the Magic Knights, save Cephiro, and return to Tokyo.

Commentary

This episode is the bad kind of filler episode: a pointless distraction that doesn't add much to anything. About the only relevant thing to come out of this episode is how Cephiro's monsters are created by the fear of its inhabitants. The beginning sets up how Hikaru shouldn't be so self sacrificing, but she spends the rest of the episode hurting herself anyway. Once again Umi and Fuu get to be helpless while Hikaru does everything, and a lot of time was used on flashbacks. It shows how far Hikaru will go for her friends, but we knew that already. I've also lost track of just how many times they've reaffirmed their resolve to become the Magic Knights. Just get to the next Rune-God already!
