Minipato: Mobile Police Patlabor Minimum

In a departure from most other Patlabor entries, Minipato: Mobile Police Patlabor Minimum is a series of super deformed style short films that were paired with the Japanese release of WXIII: Patlabor the Movie 3 in 2002. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), the short films were written by Mamoru Oshii and marked his return to the franchise following the release of the second film in 1993. The digital paper puppet theater technique combines paper cutouts, clay and CG to depict the characters of SV2 as flat, 2D objects, similar to the visual style of Nintendo's Paper Mario video games. Pioneer Entertainment released Minipato in the U.S. in 2002, but only as part of its deluxe special edition for WXIII. The shorts are included as part of Maiden Japan's Blu-ray and DVD reissue of WXIII.
