Mospeada: Love, Live, Alive

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

After the war, Yellow drives through the countryside on his Blowsperior. After traveling through a forest, he stops for a break in a ruined city filled with the wreckage of human and Inbit mecha. He looks at the destruction around him and pulls out a drink can, along with several photos of his friends. Yellow finishes his drink and drives off. Elsewhere, stage hands set up an outdoor stage for Yellow's concert. Yellow arrives and grabs a quick bite before putting on his makeup. By the time night falls, an enormous crowd has gathered for the concert. Yellow emerges from his trailer and runs on stage after his band starts playing. He then addresses the crowd and tells them he wants to sing a love song. Later, Yellow gives an interview to a reporter between sets. The reporter asks what the stage means to Yellow, and he answers that it's life itself. He says that he wants to satisfy people, and having fans come to see him in concert is the greatest feeling. She asks if he still crossdresses, and he answers that though there isn't a need any longer, he still likes doing it. However, he notes that womens' clothing has become more expensive recently. The reporter asks Yellow if there's anyone special in his life, and he looks at pictures of Stick and the others and tells her that he met true comrades. After the concert ends, Yellow sits alone in the dark and opens his eyes when he feels light shining on him. He looks up and sees Stick, Aisha, Ray, Houquet, Mint and Jim standing in front of him with candles. Everyone sits around a campfire under a tree as it rains. The next morning, Yellow gets up while everyone else is still sleeping and walks away pushing his Blowsperior. The others wake up and stay in their sleeping bags as Yellow drives off in the morning fog. Elsewhere, Solzie drinks coffee at a lake side cabin. Yellow writes a song by a campfire and pulls out an acoustic guitar to play it.

Commentary

This music compilation OVA is essentially the same thing as Macross Flashback 2012, although it precedes it by almost two years. Like Flashback, it features a few minutes of new animation wrapped around a bunch of clips from the TV series. The few minutes of new animation focus on Yellow's travels after the war and a concert he performs. Since he doesn't have to pretend to be a woman anymore, this is the first time we get to hear him sing some of his songs with a male voice (the end of episode 25 doesn't really count because it was just the show's opening theme). After the concert, Stick and the others show up and spend the night camping with Yellow. It was nice to see them make at least cameos for their reunion, along with a brief appearance by Solzie. Aside from the clips and new footage, the rest of the OVA's 55-minute runtime is rounded out by clean versions of the TV series' opening and ending sequences. While this OVA doesn't compare to having a full-fledged sequel, it's still a nice little bonus to have, although it was never released in the U.S. by either Streamline Pictures or ADV Films.
