18: Tallgeese Destroyed

Lady Une
receives confirmation that the five mad scientists once worked for
OZ and disappeared in AC 175 during the development of the Tallgeese.
She intends for them to build a mobile suit superior to the Tallgeese
and the Gundams. On Earth, Zechs is held by OZ on an aircraft carrier
traveling across the ocean. He gets a call from Treize, and he is
asked if he will continue to fight the Gundams. Zechs says that
he was fighting them out of personal feelings and that his battle
with them is over. Treize wants Zechs to sacrifice himself for OZ
so that he can get away because a trial would create complications.
Nearby, Chief Engineer Tubarov shows Duke Dermail a demonstration
of the mobile doll program using Leos. A rogue Leo appears and attacks
the mobile dolls. The attack ends when the pilot identifies himself
as Treize. He says he wants to represent humanity in battle, and
Tubarov orders his men to kill him. Treize issues an order to kill
Tubarov, and his men pull guns on him. Treize tells them to stand
down.
In space,
Alliance soldiers pick up a signal from Quatre's shuttle. They decide
to send Leos to get the shuttle so they can become allies. Nichol
and his mobile dolls pick up the Leos and the shuttle and suits
and move to intercept. Lady Une asks the mad scientists to build
a new mobile suit, and they refuse. The Alliance pilots find Quatre
and are surprised he is a boy. The scientists give in when Lady
Une orders the shuttle to be destroyed. The mobile dolls destroy
the Leos, and the shuttle is destroyed as well. Quatre floats away
in a damaged Leo. Back on Earth, Zechs prepares the Tallgeese for
battle. A group of Aries and Cancers belonging to Alliance soldiers
will attack him to prove themselves to OZ. The battle begins, and
though Zechs is outnumbered by 70 to 1, he destroys all the suits
and escapes. His mask breaks in battle, and he declares that he
can no longer be Treize's friend. In space, Heero gives a speech
in school about the colonies and war. The teacher tells him that
his speech is inappropriate, and she refers to him as Duo Maxwell.
On Earth, the Tallgeese washes up on a beach and Zechs ejects from
it.
One thing
that's always bothered me about this episode is the misleading title.
Though the Tallgeese does get destroyed later on in the series,
it certainly doesn't happen in this episode. What I liked about
this episode is that barely focuses on any of the boys, but it turns
out pretty well. It's certainly been awhile since we've seen Treize.
It's strange how his Leo takes so much damage but remains untouched.
It's like it becomes invincible just because he's in it. Also, the
sparkling effects of Zech's pretty boy hair at the end was an unnecessary
extra touch. He's a man for god's sake, not some pretty girl!
Overall
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
