Gundam Unicorn

Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn

Announced for Gundam's 30th anniversary in 2009, the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn OVA series marks the first time in Gundam history that an anime has been adapted from a pre-existing work. Based on the novels of the same name by Harutoshi Fukui, Gundam Unicorn is set in UC 0096, three years after the events of Char's Counterattack. Directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi (Rurouni Kenshin), the series stars Banagher Links, a young engineering student from Side 4 who is drawn into a series of events involving the mysterious Unicorn Gundam. The Unicorn Gundam is connected to Laplace's Box, a secret item dating back to the dawn of the Universal Century. The production of Gundam Unicorn marks the first non-CG Universal Century OVA series since the release of The 08th M.S. Team in 1996. In contrast to earlier releases, Bandai simultaneously distributed the series around the world on Blu-ray, DVD, the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live and Daisuki. Unicorn was originally intended to run for 6 episodes, but in 2012 Bandai revealed that the series would be extended with a 7th episode, which was released in spring 2014. The final episode's video release included a compilation special, Episode EX. A TV re-edit entitled Gundam Unicorn RE:0096 is currently airing in Japan and streaming with English subtitles on Daisuki. The TV version's episode count has not yet been revealed.
