Turn A Gundam

∀ Gundam

After the end of Victory Gundam in early 1994, director Yoshiyuki Tomino took a five year hiatus from Gundam. In 1999, he returned to the Gundam franchise with the 50 episode series ∀ Gundam (read as Turn A Gundam) as part of Sunrise's "Gundam Big Bang" 20th Anniversary celebration. Set in Correct Century (CC) 2345, Turn A's story focuses on an Earth that has regressed technologically to a World War I level. This technology puts them at a disadvantage against the lunar colonists called the Moonrace, who have come back to Earth to reclaim their ancestral home. Fighting against his own people is Loran Cehack, a Moonrace recruit sent to Earth who uncovers the ancient Turn A Gundam. As he often does, Tomino assembled a new staff for this series, including composer Yoko Kanno (Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop), character designer Akira Yasuda (Street Fighter II) as well as American mechanical designer Syd Mead (Blade Runner), who created the controversial design for the title Gundam. Tomino later revisited the series for a pair of compilation movies. Bandai Entertainment's plans to release Turn A Gundam in North America were canceled in 2012 when the company ceased operation. However, in 2015 the TV series and movies were released on DVD in partnership between Sunrise and Right Stuf. A Blu-ray release followed in 2017.
