Gundam SEED

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED

As the ninth Gundam TV series, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED was Bandai's move to bring the franchise into the 21st century. Directed by Mitsuo Fukuda (Cyber Formula, Dendoh), the series was the first set in the alternate universe calendar Cosmic Era (C.E.). The series begins with a war between Earth and the colonies that is similar to the One Year War of the original Gundam series. On one side is the Earth Alliance, and on the opposite is the space colonies that form ZAFT (Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty). Genetic engineering has led to a division in humanity, with normal humans known as "Naturals" and the genetically altered known as "Coordinators." Once again, a young civilian who dislikes war finds himself being a Gundam pilot, and this time the hero is a Coordinator named Kira Yamato. At first forced by circumstance to fight his own people, Kira now finds himself in the middle of a war between two genocidal governments. The series aired in Japan from 2002-03 and was followed by a "Special Edition" compilation trilogy in 2004. Also in 2004, the series had its U.S. premiere on Cartoon Network's Toonami block. The success of SEED led to a sequel, the 2004 TV series Gundam SEED DESTINY. In 2011, Bandai aired an HD remaster of the series in Japan which cropped the episodes to widescreen, added some newly reanimated scenes and deleted two clip episodes. Right Stuf will release the HD remaster on Blu-ray in 2018 with a new English dub.
