Aura Battler Dunbine

Dunbine

Aura Battler Dunbine was just one in a line of many Yoshiyuki Tomino mecha anime series from the 1980's. What sets Dunbine apart is that opposed to taking place in the future, or being set out in space, the show takes place on the medieval world of Byston Well. As a result the storyline and mecha ended up being among the most original of all of Tomino's work from the decade. It stars Shou Zama, a young man from Japan who one night suddenly finds himself transported to Byston Well, where he is recruited as a pilot for the Aura Battler Dunbine. From a production standpoint, Dunbine united Tomino with character designer Tomonori Kogawa for the third consecutive series after 1980's Legendary Giant God Ideon and 1982's Blue Gale Xabungle. Kazutaka Miyatake, who had done many designs for Macross the year before was brought in to do the unique insect-like mecha. In 1988, the three episode OVA sequel Aura Battler Dunbine: The Tale of Neo Byston Well was released. In 1996, Tomino returned to the world of Byston Well with Tales of Byston Well: Garzey's Wing, an alternate retelling of Dunbine without mecha. In 1997, Central Park Media released Garzey's Wing in the U.S., while ADV Films released the original TV series in 2003. Those releases are both out of print, along with Bandai Visual's release of The Wings of Rean. The Tale of Neo Byston Well was never released in the U.S.
